Pre-show green room, Denver Hard Rock Arena<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The green room backstage was buzzing\u2014half with excitement, half with fluorescent tube lights that flickered like they were trying to drop the beat. The venue smelled like anticipation, stale sweat, and Febreze sprayed over questionable decisions. Feral Eclipse had officially made it\u2014they were opening for Spinal Muzzle<\/em>, one of the most infamous hard rock bands of the past two decades. Tattooed, loud, legendary\u2026 and absolutely, unequivocally insane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gabriel had vanished the second their backstage passes were clipped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thane had been double-checking the rigging specs, clipboard in claw, barely holding it together after the clustertruck that was the broken van axle incident earlier. Mark was quietly nursing a giant bottle of soda like it was his only lifeline to sanity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then Rico wandered in, chewing half a granola bar and looking\u2026 worried.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHey, uh\u2026 Thane?\u201d he said, voice low.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thane didn\u2019t even look up. \u201cIf this is about a missing mic stand, I swear I will\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not that. It\u2019s Gabe. I just walked by the other band\u2019s green room. He\u2019s in there. With them<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark looked up. \u201cDefine \u2018with them.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rico scratched the back of his neck. \u201cHe was laughing. Real loud. And… I think they handed him something. White. Powdery. On a mirror.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark blinked. \u201c…Oh no.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thane dropped the clipboard. \u201cHe did not<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jonah poked his head in, eyes wide. \u201cUh\u2026 he did. He definitely<\/em> did.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

By the time Thane made it down the hallway, the door to the Spinal Muzzle green room was wide open. Inside, the band\u2019s frontman\u2014Razor, who somehow looked both 45 and immortal\u2014was doubled over laughing. Gabriel stood in the middle of the room, eyes way<\/em> too wide, pacing in tight circles and talking faster than Thane could think<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c\u2014and that\u2019s why I think if we add strobes to the kick hits we could realign the crowd\u2019s heartbeats with the rhythm and literally control time,<\/em> guys, I mean\u2014oh hey, Thane!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thane stared at him. \u201cGabriel. What. Did. You. Do?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gabriel beamed, nose twitching. \u201cMade friends! And they gave me special friend powder!<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rico facepalmed behind Thane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark leaned in the doorway, sipping his soda. \u201cWell. This should be fun.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fifteen minutes later<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Back in the Feral Eclipse green room, Gabriel was upside-down on a folding chair, mumbling about sound waves and coffee flavor harmonics. Jonah had barricaded the door with a keyboard stand, and Rico was scouring the venue\u2019s snack table for orange juice. Mark just stood silently in the corner, sipping and judging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thane crouched down in front of Gabriel. \u201cGabriel. Fucking <\/em>focus. What did you take?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gabriel blinked, one ear twitching wildly. \u201cIt was like lightning! In my face!<\/em> And then I was\u2026 faster than music, man.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thane sighed and looked at the others. \u201cWe\u2019re not making it through this show unless we burn that powder stash and chain him to a bass amp.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark didn\u2019t even flinch. \u201cHe\u2019s going to crash mid-set and take out half the drum kit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jonah grinned. \u201cSo, normal show then?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gabriel suddenly sat bolt upright. \u201cI JUST WROTE A BASS SOLO IN MY HEAD. IT\u2019S MADE OF GEOMETRY.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thane rubbed his temples. \u201cOkay. We\u2019re going into damage control mode. Jonah\u2014water. Rico\u2014more water. Mark\u2014remind me why I don\u2019t just maul<\/em> that other band.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
