The sun was barely high enough to warm the rooftop HVAC units when Thane spotted him: the \u201cpromoter.\u201d A wiry man in his late 50s wearing a wrinkled polo with a lanyard that said ALL ACCESS<\/strong> and JERRY<\/strong> in Comic Sans. He was nursing a Big Gulp and barking into a walkie-talkie that definitely wasn’t connected to anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thane approached with that special look on his face\u2014the one Mark quietly referred to as pre-murder neutral.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cJerry,\u201d Thane said flatly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jerry blinked and smiled like a guy who\u2019d already spent half the show budget on vape cartridges and frozen chicken tenders. \u201cHey, buddy! Love the gear! You boys all settled in?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re patched into what looks like a Soviet missile control panel, the green room smells like regret, and your sound guy just asked Gabriel if XLRs could go into \u2018HDMI holes.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jerry squinted. \u201cWell, hey now\u2014Logan and Reese are interns.<\/em> Gotta give kids a chance, right?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey tried to ground the fog machine to a folding chair.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jerry chuckled. \u201cAh, classic stagecraft!\u201d Then he winked. \u201cYou know how it is.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thane\u2019s claws flexed once, involuntarily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gabriel wandered up behind him, sipping a cappuccino he absolutely conjured into existence from pure caffeine willpower. \u201cHey, Jerry, quick question\u2014who<\/em> thought putting a raccoon trap near the dressing room was a solid idea?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jerry blinked again. \u201cRaccoon trap?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYeah,\u201d Gabriel said, lifting his shirt to reveal a thin scratch across his side. \u201cWe met Ralph. He\u2019s doing great.<\/em> Just confused and angry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At that exact moment, Maya stormed up, wielding a band tech sheet in one hand. \u201cYou gave us a stage plot with six<\/em> DI boxes. We need sixteen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jerry looked at it. \u201cWell, y\u2019know, we usually have more\u2026 stripped down<\/em> acts. You guys got a lotta… what do you call \u2018em? Wolf\u2026 requirements?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou booked a band with three werewolves and a pyro license,\u201d Thane said, voice low and lethal. \u201cYou knew who we were.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWell, not me<\/em> personally,\u201d Jerry hedged. \u201cBooking’s handled by my assistant. She’s out on medical leave. Got kicked by a donkey.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thane stared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark walked up behind them, arms folded, voice dry as a dust storm. \u201cYou know what? I believe that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jerry, sweating a little now, waved a hand. \u201cLook, it\u2019s all gonna be great. We\u2019ve got drinks in the green room\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a Capri Sun and a can of expired La Croix,\u201d Gabriel said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd I\u2019m sure the crowd\u2019s gonna be awesome!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe haven\u2019t seen a single piece of promo,\u201d Maya snapped. \u201cNo flyers. No marquee. One guy outside asked if this was a laser tag tournament.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019ll refund some on the backend,\u201d Jerry said, already backing away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo,\u201d Thane said firmly. \u201cYou\u2019re going to pay up front<\/em>, in cash<\/em>, or we walk.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gabriel smiled behind him. \u201cAnd if we walk, Jerry, we\u2019re taking your car battery<\/em> with us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jerry stared for one frozen moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then nodded. \u201cI\u2019ll go get the envelope.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He scurried off like a caffeinated squirrel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thane turned to the others, exhaling hard. \u201cAnyone else want to quit humanity and start a fire?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
