It was after the second encore in Kansas City\u2014a packed show at the Midland Theater, where the walls still hummed with the echo of thousands of voices chanting the final chorus of Field Notes From the Stars.<\/em> The song had officially entered the main setlist a week ago, and now, every time they played it, the crowd lit up the venue with cell phone flashlights like stars in a digital sky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But backstage, beneath the high of another killer night, a soft tension hummed in the green room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thane stood at the end of the hallway, arms crossed, talking quietly with Gabriel. Jonah was toweling off his neck, still glowing from the performance, while Cassie sat on a crate, flipping through a worn notebook with half-baked lyrics scrawled inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A knock at the door cut through the air\u2014gentle, hesitant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maya opened it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Outside stood a girl in her late teens, wearing an oversized Feral Eclipse<\/em> hoodie and a lanyard with the venue\u2019s \u201cProduction Assistant\u201d pass hanging from it. Her hair was pulled into a messy ponytail. Her hands trembled slightly at her sides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cUm\u2026\u201d she said, voice barely above a whisper. \u201cSorry. I know I\u2019m not really supposed to\u2026 interrupt.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cassie looked up. \u201cHey, it\u2019s okay. You with the crew?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She nodded, eyes darting toward Jonah. \u201cI \u2014 I was at the Minneapolis show. The small one. The VIP night.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That got everyone\u2019s attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI was backstage,\u201d she continued. \u201cI\u2026 recorded that song. Field Notes.<\/em> I didn\u2019t mean to\u2026 not really. I just\u2026 I couldn\u2019t not.<\/em> I\u2019d never heard anything like it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jonah stood slowly. Gabriel tilted his head, a curious glint in his eye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou\u2019re the one who posted it,\u201d Thane said gently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She nodded again, lower lip trembling. \u201cI didn\u2019t even put my name on it. I just\u2026 I thought it might disappear if I didn\u2019t share it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There was a long pause. She braced herself for anger, or disappointment. She didn\u2019t get either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead, Jonah stepped forward with a slow, quiet smile. \u201cYou saved it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her eyes widened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gabriel was next, grinning like she\u2019d just offered him espresso and a standing ovation. \u201cYou birthed<\/em> a classic, starlight. That post has changed people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cassie stood and crossed the room, holding out her hand. \u201cThank you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m sorry if it wasn\u2019t cool,\u201d the girl whispered, still unsure whether to cry or laugh. \u201cI just\u2026 I didn\u2019t think anyone would ever hear it if I didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark, from the corner, added dryly, \u201cBest unlicensed distribution of a track I\u2019ve ever seen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Everyone laughed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thane walked over, calm and kind as always. \u201cWhat\u2019s your name?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEmily,\u201d she said softly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWell, Emily,\u201d he replied, \u201chow do you feel about getting credited properly when the single drops next week?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her mouth dropped open. \u201cWait\u2026 seriously?!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t forget our pack,\u201d Jonah said. \u201cEspecially the ones who believe in us before we believe in ourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Emily wiped her eyes, nodding. \u201cCan I\u2026 can I come back and see the next show?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gabriel placed his paw gently on her shoulder. \u201cYou\u2019ve got a lifetime pass, starcatcher. All-access.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
