Others just kind of flickered awkwardly while Mark barked into his headset and wrestled with a control panel that looked like it had been installed in 1992.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThane, I swear on every bulb I own\u2014if one more fluorescent tube hums at me I will physically unplug this mall.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Backstage, Cassie rolled her eyes. \u201cYou mean with your claws or with violence?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cYes.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Out front, the crowd packed the food court and beyond. There were fans pressed up against the Orange Julius. Teens hanging from the second-story railing. A Wetzel\u2019s Pretzels employee openly weeping from joy. An entire line of kids in makeshift ears and tails bouncing with excitement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And then\u2026 fog.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Not the elegant, stage-enhancing kind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The way-too-much-because-Gabriel-found-the-switch<\/strong> kind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n White haze rolled out like a horror movie gone club scene. Someone in the crowd yelled \u201cIS THIS A DREAM?\u201d as a laser pointer swept over the Hot Topic sign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Gabriel walked out first, bass slung across his back, bouncing slightly on his clawed toes, tail swishing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Behind him, the humans stepped out in sequence\u2014Rico, Cassie, Maya, Jonah\u2014each one getting a wave of cheers loud enough to shake the Dippin\u2019 Dots freezer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then Mark\u2019s voice crackled through the headset into Thane\u2019s ear:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cLights are dead. I\u2019m improvising.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n \u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cLook up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Thane glanced skyward just as a series of home improvement clamp lights<\/strong> and modified emergency flashlights<\/strong> flicked on in timed bursts\u2014strapped to ceiling vents and support beams with copious<\/em> amounts of duct tape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cOf course,\u201d Thane muttered. \u201cThat tracks.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Cassie stepped up to the mic and grinned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWhat\u2019s up, Sooner Hills?! Who\u2019s ready to say they saw a concert between Sbarro and Build-A-Bear?!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n The crowd lost it<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Drums kicked in. Guitars screamed. Bass thundered. And just like that\u2026 the band tore through their opening song like the world was ending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Gabriel spun mid-stage, claws flashing, tail flicking wildly, bass thumping like a second heart. Rico dropped to his knees in front of a Claire\u2019s kiosk and shredded a solo that made one of the earring displays collapse. Cassie\u2019s vocals shook the ceiling. Maya windmilled her guitar so hard she knocked over a mall plant someone had moved too close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And Thane\u2014barefoot, grounded, grinning like a wolf who\u2019d earned every second of this madness\u2014ran the soundboard from side-stage, eyes sharp, hands fluid, making everything sing<\/em> through a system never meant for anything louder than elevator music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Somewhere between the second and third song, someone fired a t-shirt cannon<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mark: \u201cWHO GAVE JONAH THE T-SHIRT CANNON?!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jonah (over drums): \u201cNO ONE SAID I COULDN\u2019T.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n A fan caught a shirt, screamed, and fainted directly into a fountain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They closed with their viral hit\u2014\u201cField Notes From the Stars\u201d<\/em>\u2014and as the last note echoed through the mall, the entire crowd sang the final chorus back<\/em> to them. Loud. Proud. Perfectly off-key.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Gabriel clutched his chest, eyes wide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Thane didn\u2019t say anything. He didn\u2019t need<\/em> to.
