Mark had somehow coaxed the venue\u2019s ancient lighting rig into behaving with a mixture of brute willpower and threats. Gabriel was bouncing across the stage like a caffeinated panther. Cassie\u2019s vocals were <em>incredible.<\/em> Jonah hadn\u2019t broken <em>anything.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maya turned to Rico between songs. \u201cThis feels suspiciously functional.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYeah,\u201d Rico muttered. \u201cI don\u2019t trust it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>The very next song\u2014<em>\u201cMonsters Like Us\u201d<\/em> \u2014 started off killer. Big riff. Loud crowd. Flashing lights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And then&#8230; the <strong>fog machine<\/strong> lost its mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of a steady haze, it suddenly launched a plume of dense smoke directly <em>into<\/em> Jonah\u2019s face with the force of a small jet engine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGAAHHH,\u201d Jonah yelped mid-drumroll, vanishing like a magician doing a vanishing act with a leaf blower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cassie burst out laughing mid-line, choking on a note. Maya tripped over a cable trying to look back. Rico shouted, \u201cIS HE STILL IN THERE?!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From the cloud, Jonah\u2019s voice emerged:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI HAVE TRANSCENDED THIS PLANE OF EXISTENCE. I AM THE DRUM-GHOST NOW.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile in the crowd, someone had <em>tossed a taco<\/em> onto the stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like\u2026 a <em>perfect<\/em>, structurally intact taco, in a tiny foil cradle. It landed softly right at Gabriel\u2019s feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He blinked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIs this\u2026 for me?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The crowd <em>roared<\/em> with approval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thane, deadpan into the mic from side-stage: \u201c<em>Please do not feed the werewolf.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gabriel, ignoring him completely, picked up the taco with a reverent look. \u201cI will name you Cruncho. You are my son now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>That was about when the crowd started doing the Wave. But not just any Wave\u2014this one involved glowsticks, foam wolf ears, at least three inflatable guitars, and a shirtless dude on someone\u2019s shoulders holding up a sign that read:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>\u201cTOUCH PAWS 4 GOOD LUCK\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Thane facepalmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rico leaned over mid-solo and whispered, \u201cShould we\u2026 <em>encourage<\/em> this?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gabriel grabbed a mic. \u201cAlright, Amarillo. You want chaos? You <em>got<\/em> chaos.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He launched into a solo bass riff so nasty it physically rattled a row of stadium chairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cassie jumped down into the pit to do a dance with a six-year-old in a DIY wolf hoodie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emily caught <em>all of it<\/em> on camera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Mark\u2019s voice came through the comms: \u201cI swear if one more inflatable wolf head hits the lighting truss I will rewire the universe.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From above, an inflatable wolf head <em>gently bounced off the moving lights.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mark: \u201cThat\u2019s it. Smoke mode <em>maximum.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fog machines all fired at once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>By the end of the song, the crowd was drenched, glowing, and screaming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thane\u2019s fur was puffed out from sheer humidity. Gabriel had shredded a solo so hard he snapped a string and just kept <em>going.<\/em> Jonah looked like he\u2019d gone five rounds with a ghost-powered taco stand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cassie stepped back up to the mic, breathless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAMARILLO\u2026 what the <em>HELL<\/em> was that?!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cFERAL ECLIPSE!\u201d<br>\u201cWE LOVE YOU!\u201d<br>\u201cI THREW THE TACO!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>A spotlight found the taco-thrower. A tiny elderly woman in a homemade wolf hoodie held up both fists in triumph.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gabriel nearly collapsed laughing. \u201cShe\u2019s our new manager. It\u2019s decided.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>They closed the show with <em>\u201cRun With Us\u201d<\/em>, still howling from the chaos. The final note faded into a sea of chants, cheers, and people barking like enthusiastic wolves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thane gave one last look out at the crowd from sidestage \u2014 utterly feral, glowing in the dark \u2014 and shook his head with a grin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou people are completely unhinged,\u201d he muttered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gabriel slung an arm around him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnd we love every second of it.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Halfway through the setlist in Amarillo, things were going too well.
